ingredients for buffalo fried pickles:

Dill Pickle Chips: Use your favorite brand of pickles, as long as they are chips (opposed to slices, spears, etc).

Flour: You’ll need all-purpose flour for this recipe. You can also use a 1:1 gluten-free substitute for all-purpose flour too.

Seasonings: A little bit of granulated garlic, sea salt, and black pepper. Just the basics.

Buffalo Sauce: This is where it gets interesting! We’re combing a classic like fried pickles with another classic: buffalo sauce! I used my favorite Primal Kitchen Buffalo Sauce for this recipe.

Water: Used to thin out the batter.

Avocado Oil: This recipe uses avocado oil for frying. Not only is it better for you, but it’s best when cooking at a high smoke point. For more tips on cooking with oil, see below!

Ranch: Lastly, we can’t have fried pickles without dipping in ranch! I used this ranch, as it’s non-dairy and seed oil free!

tips for cooking with oil:

Choose the right kind of oil: This recipe uses avocado oil for frying. Not only is avocado oil a better-for-you option, it’s best for cooking things at a high smoke point (or a hotter temperature!) as opposed to other oils.

Heat slowly: Heat your pan at medium heat until hot. Avoid cranking up the heat quicker as the oil could burn and splatter all over, which could be dangerous!

Choose the right type of pan: I always prefer cooking with a cast iron skillet when using oil, as opposed to a lighter pan.

Don’t add food too early: Wait until the oil is nice and hot before adding the food. If you add the pickles too early, they won’t crisp up and the batter will fall off. To ensure it’s nice and hot, add a touch of the batter first. If it sizzles, it’s ready!

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour and seasonings. Next, add in Primal Kitchen Buffalo Sauce and water. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  • Add avocado oil to a cast iron skillet filling the pan about 1-inch high. Turn to medium heat until it reaches about 350 degrees F or until sizzling. Note: you want the oil hot but not splattering so it's best to heat slowly on medium heat!
  • Using tongs, coat each pickle in the batter. Add to the hot oil for about 2 minutes each side or until golden brown and crispy. Fry in batches of about 8-10 pickles at a time, leaving room in between.
  • Remove from the batter and place on a wire rack to cool. Serve with Primal Kitchen Ranch and enjoy!
